'Cicada Catcher'
Brown-headed Honeyeater - Melithreptus brevirostris
Original oil on stretched canvas 20.32 x 25.4cm (8 x 10in).
In the dense thicket of the bushland at my home near Maitland I had the camera ready, searching for the Speckled Warblers I had glimpsed moments before. Catching movement to my right I aimed the camera and instead found this little Brown-headed Honeyeater holding onto its prized catch. It looked back at me for a moment as I snapped away with the camera and having finished showing off its trophy hopped down from its branch to disappear into the thick scrub. I was very happy to have captured this unexpected little bird and paint its portrait. Unlike the more colourful Australian Honeyeaters it is very rare to find an artwork of the Brown-headed Honeyeater, so for me it was a joy to bring to life the character and charm of this lesser-known Australian native.
Artwork is sold unframed.
Arrives with a Certificate of Authenticity.
